Spring breakers choose Habitat volunteer work over beach

ABC-7 Reporting
March 8, 2010

SARASOTA - Instead of hitting the beaches this spring break, several college students are volunteering their time to help clean up the Suncoast.  Monday they spent hours cleaning up an eyesore some are tired of looking at. From pressure washing, to priming, to patchwork on more than a mile of cinder block wall, the college students say they can't think of a better way to spend their time off this Spring Break.

"It's what we like to do," says Kyle Holst.  He's from Grand Valley State University in Michigan. Kelci Semrow is studying special education at the same college.  She says volunteering with Habitat for Humanity makes her vacation worthwhile.  "It's really rewarding, really really rewarding, and it's in Florida. How can it get much better than that?" asks Semrow.

Students Cassie Otte and Hayden Mcgowan from the Ringling College of Art and Design are also helping.  "We don't really have time over the school year to do it, so we finally have a break," says Otte. "Yeah it's a nice way to get out to because we're like stuck in the computer lab all the time, you know, just to get out and help the community," says McGowan.

They're using donated materials to paint the wall that runs along Tuttle Avenue and Martin Luther King Way.  It surrounds the Lockwood Meadows neighborhood. Inside the wall, Habitat for Humanity is using money from the Neighborhood Stabilization Program to fix up a home that had been an eyesore due to foreclosure.  "It's a great win-win for everyone," says the Director of Construction Dean Shelton.

He says it's the first project for Habitat in Sarasota County, where they're working in a foreclosed situation.  He says it's helping to revitalize the neighborhood, making neighbors happy.  A Habitat family who's logged three hundred hours will move in soon.  "Everyone is very proud of this house," says Shelton.

"We've been hearing people all morning with some real positive responses, so it feels good," says Pederson. The home is one of three projects Habitat for Humanity is working on in Sarasota County under the Neighborhood Stabilization Program. Students from the University of Virginia will join the others Tuesday to help work on the wall.
